So Liam Neeson is the next over-the-hill actor to try and bring Philip Marlowe to life on the big screen. He stars in MARLOWE adapted by William Monahan from The Black Eyed Blonde novel by John Banville.
Apparently it was first announced in 2017 but Director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game) didn’t start directing until June 2021. According to reports, filming is completed apparently with locations in Europe (Spain, Ireland). Do they have mean streets over there?
It’s set in 1950 and has Marlowe once again “finding himself in the underbelly of Hollywood.” ZZZZZZ! Apparently Jessica Lange and Diane Kreuger play a sick mother-daughter act that Marlowe gets caught up in. Release date is sometime in 2023.
It looks like Hollywood players, as per usual, just don’t have no respect for their elders. Hey, Neil, Liam. There already is a movie entitled “Marlowe” Didncha ever hear of Stirling Silliphant and James Garner’s movie? That was an adaptation of an actual Raymond Chandler Philip Marlow novel (The Little Sister). A classic appearance by the legendary Bruce Lee. What you never heard of him either? Not surprising.
“Hollywood players, as per usual, just don’t have no respect …” is right.
Filmed in Europe?! Really?
LA is a virtual character in the books and in flicks like Murder My Sweet.
John, you also mentioned the Northern Ireland born Neeson’s age.
So I looked it up, he is going to be 70 in a few months.
Mitchum already did the geezer Marlowe bit in The Big Sleep and Farewell My
Lovely, and he was 10 years younger than Neeson when he did The Big Sleep.
The only “modern” -1980’s – Marlowe that I liked was Powers Boothe’s 11
episode HBO series(free on You Tube).
Boothe said Mitchum tapped him on the shoulder in line at a take out joint and
told him how much he enjoyed him in the role,
“it was better than getting an Emmy”.
Damn John, you are way ahead of the curve on this one, it’s going to be a
stinker alright.
PS – I love that scene in Marlowe when Bruce Lee demolishes Garner’s
office. Throw in Rita Moreno’s topless – for 2 seconds – striptease at the
end and you have two Hollywood legends having notable moments in a
curiously overlooked gem of a film.
Thank you for sharing the above, you perked up this cruddy, cold, sleety
night for me.
I don’t have much hope for it, but you never know. BTW I made a correction. It’s not Hope Lange as Diane Krueger’s mother. It’s Jessica (King Kong) Lange in that role.
Did you know that Stirling Silliphant besides writing MARLOWE also wrote a terrific script based on Chandler’s “The Long Goodbye.” Really a shame it never got made. The updates that Silliphant wrote to make the story more contemporary were really brilliant. I read it in the UCLA Library where SS’s papers are collected.
